Are the effects of sun exposure worse than the effects from chemical sunscreens? Some new studies suggest that ingredients in sun screens can increase cancer risks. But excessive sun can cause painful burning, let alone long term skin damage.

So what’s the verdict for you and your baby? Staying inside all summer can’t be an option, and we all know that the sun provides Vitamin D, which is an important nutrient.

The Sun Lotion Option:
CosmeticDatabase.com rates sunscreen products on a ten point scale. A zero rating is the best, meaning the product has no harmful chemicals. ThinkBaby Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 has a rating of 1 on CosmeticDatabase.com, the best rating given to any sunscreen product. This rating is for the zinc, which is what makes the product effective.

ThinkBaby Sunscreen is a new product, and demand is high so supplies are limited. We are receiving inventory approximately every two weeks. $17.95

The Cover Option:
Completely eliminating all chemicals from your sun protection regiment requires good covering. This is also the only option for babies under six months old who should not use sun lotions.

A good sun hat will have a wide brim to shade the face. Urban Baby Bonnets are extremely cute, but also very practical. The hat sits well on the child’s head, and the front brim is ample sized creating lots of shade over baby’s face. A snap close chin strap keeps the hat in place. Four sizes are available to fit newborns through toddlers. $34.00

FreeHand Baby Carriers manufactures the Ozone, a protective covering for baby that works over baby carriers, car seats and strollers. This mesh-like fabric is cool and breathable, but blocks 95% of the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. $44.95

Don’t Forget Eye Protection:
A cheap pair of sun glasses can be worse for your baby’s eyes than going without. This is because the darkened lenses cause the eye to open, allowing harmful rays to enter the eye. Only use sun glasses that offer a complete spectrum UVA and UVB blocking, like Baby Banz. $18-27

Alternatives for Little Foodies

It’s a momentous event when your baby begins solid food! The funny faces, the exciting new tastes! You want the best for your baby, making sure everything is safe and all natural. That goes for tableware, too. Glass is the best material for serving and storing food, especially hot foods. But when
there are kids around glass isn’t always practical, until now.

Kidishes are kid-friendly bowls, cups, and plates made from tempered glass. Strong and durable, they can withstand banging on the table or being pushed to the floor along with those strained peas. Diswasher and microwave safe!

Natural wood is also a safe alternative to plastic. Our Bambu Infant Utensil set has always been a hit.

If you’re looking for a more earth friendly alternative to the “Take and Toss” plastics, check out the Dandelion line of ReUsable plates, bowls, spoons and forks. They’re made from corn, using significantly less fossil resources by switching to a renewable and sustainable resource.

An innovative way to collect breast milk that would otherwise be absorbed into a nursing pad and thrown away.

The average nursing mom leaks 1-4 ounces of milk every time she feeds her baby. Save every drop with this reusable milk collector.

At Milkies, we care about the safety of the materials that make up our products. The Milk-Saver has been rigorously tested to ensure zero chemical leaching and contains no BPA or phthalates.

Happy New Year!

Seems every newsletter you read about now begins with “Can you believe it’s already 2010?” I’m still having trouble figuring out how to pronounce 2010. Is it twenty-ten? Or two-thousand-ten? I’ve also heard, from those who attached themselves to the previous decade, oh-ten.

No matter what you call it, 2010 will certainly be an exciting year for us at Sprout Soup. We have lined up lots of great enrichment opportunities, parenting discussions and classes, and we’ll also see the return of the Sprout Swap!

The days and months seem to fly by when you’ve got kids, but I hope you will carve some time out of your busy schedules to join us in our quest to create a natural parenting community here in Columbus.

New Baby Carriers at Sprout Soup

Baby carriers are becoming an essential for all parents, and as more families see the benefits and joys of carrying their children, the options in carriers continues to grow. Sprout Soup will introduce three new carriers in the coming months. All are members of the fastest-growing carrier category: soft structured (buckle) carriers, and two of them can be used from infancy through toddlerhood. Extraordinary comfort and style options make babywearing essential for every parent.

From BabyHawk, makers of our best-selling Asian style baby carrier, comes the Oh Snap! Improving on their traditional carrier design with easy-to-use buckles and comfortable structured waist belt. What makes this carrier unique is the dual-adjustable hip buckles that allow a custom fit for everyone by changing the shape of the waist belt, transferring the child’s weight off your back and shoulders. The Oh Snap! is ideal for older infants (approximately six months and up) and will easily last through toddlerhood. This carrier is able to be used with children up to 40 pounds.

The Oh Snap! is available now at Sprout Soup in a range of colors and fabrics, or we can custom-order a carrier just for you.

Sprout Soup is also working with Olives and Applesauce to offer these gorgeous buckle carriers. The Olives and Applesauce, or O and A for short, includes an infant hammock, making it the ideal single carrier for families looking for something that can be used right away but will remain comfortable as the child grows.

Sprout Soup will offer a few limited-edition custom design O and As, look for the first to be released in January and a second in February. We will also have a selection of stocked solid and pattern carriers.

Finally, Beco Baby Carriers will introduce the Gemini this year. The Beco Butterfly has been one of our most popular carriers, the Gemini should be no different.

At first glance the Gemini has the look of an infant front pack for newborns. It is also one of the few carriers in our lineup that will allow a forward-facing position. But unlike traditional front packs the Gemini can convert to become a full-seat carrier for older children (it’s always best to support your child with a full seat that will not put stress on the developing spine). In this mode the carrier can be used with older infants and toddlers on either your front or back.

The options are expanding, but we are always available to help you choose the best carrier for your needs!

What is Attachment Parenting?

According to Attachment Parenting International, AP is:

Preparing for Childbirth and Parenting: Read what you can about childbirth and make the decisions that are right for YOU.

Feed with Love and Respect: Breastfeeding is the optimal way to satisfy an infant's nutritional and emotional needs. However, "Bottle Nursing" applies nursing behaviors to bottle-feeding to help foster a secure attachment.

Respond with Sensitivity: Tune in to what your child is communicating to you, then respond consistently and appropriately.

Use Nurturing Touch: Touch meets a baby's needs for physical contact, affection, security, stimulation, and movement.

Nighttime Parenting: Babies and children have needs at night just as they do during the day.

Provide Consistent and Loving Care: Babies and young children have an intense need for the physical presence of a consistent, loving, responsive caregiver.

Practice Positive Discipline: Discipline that is empathetic, loving, and respectful strengthens the connection between parent and child.

Strive for Balance: It is easier to be emotionally responsive when you feel in balance.

However, remember AP is an approach, rather than a strict set of rules. Parenting is too individual and baby too complex for there to be only one way. The important point is to get connected to your baby, and attachment parenting helps. AP is responsive parenting.

For more information, please come to our Columbus Attachment Parents meetings, held the second Saturday at 10:30am-11:30 am at Sprout Soup.

Handling Criticism

You’ve been there before, I am sure. Sitting at the holiday dinner table with all your relatives. Things are going well, until your child acts in a way typical for a child. Then Aunt Mavis decides it is her responsibility to give you a 4 ½ hour lecture about all that you are doing “wrong” in your parenting and how if you listen to her advice, your child will be so well-behaved and perfect (as if he wasn’t already!). One thing to keep repeating to yourself (like a mantra) is that they mean well. The parenting advice is given from a place of affection for you and your children.

However much they mean well, though, it is still difficult to listen to your choices being criticized. Here are some ideas to handle the oft unasked for “advice.”

• Don’t complain. If you don’t share your concerns (ie sleeping issues) they might not feel like you are asking for help.
• Take the opportunity to educate them (though this can cause arguments and hurt feelings if it is not approached with diplomacy). Use this option with caution and be sure to have your facts straight. Some people just aren’t interested in the latest research.
• Change the subject! “So, you are still nursing your 12 month old? Don’t you think it is time to wean?” “Wow! How about those [insert sports team here]? Think they are going to win their next game?”
• They often criticize because when you do things differently, they feel like you are judging their choices. Reassure them that you know they did the best they could with the information they had at the time.
• Leave no room for argument. “Yes, we co-sleep. It works well for our family.” If you don’t sound uncertain, they will realize it is not a topic for discussion.
• Smile and nod. This goes far! Just accept the advice and disregard it when you leave.

We have many, many more tips, ideas and thoughts about handling criticism (and sympathetic ears too). We’ll cover this topic during our Columbus Attachment Parents Meeting on November 14 at 10am. Come meet some people who WON’T criticize you and that don’t think nursing–extended or otherwise, baby wearing, breastfeeding, co-sleeping, gentle-disciplining parents are weird.

The Positive Effects of Carrying Your Baby

This is an excerpt of an article that was published on our blog. Read it in its entirety online.

Why should you carry your baby? It's no secret that babies like to be held. After nine months in a warm cozy womb, babies long for the close contact, warmth and gentle movements that they have become accustomed to. Columbia University conducted a study in 1990, which showed that mother and infant pairs who utilized soft baby carriers created a more securely attached relationship. Infant attachment plays an important role in healthy child development and has long-term effects on how the child will relate to others throughout their lives.

Baby-wearing makes brains smarter. So, not only is your child happier, but you can make them smarter as well. The first year of life is a crucial one for brain development. By holding your baby and letting him see your face and the world around you, you are helping the baby's neurons connect. And more connections make a smarter brain.

Baby-wearing makes babies happier. By carrying your baby you also drastically reduce the amount of time a baby spends crying (although even carried babies DO cry). The reason for this is that the constant movement helps to regulate the baby's world. Babies are used to motion from being in the womb. Carrying your baby helps to recreate this environment to help you baby better make the transition from womb to world.

What kind of baby carrier? With so many benefits, it is a good idea to plan to hold and carry your baby as much as possible. There are many great baby carriers available today that make this easier, and also help keep your hands free so you can tend to other children or tasks. When choosing a carrier for your baby, look for one that will hold him in the same positions you use when holding him in your arms. For many babies this is an upright or semi-upright position with their tummy against your chest.

Sprout Soup has the largest selection of carriers in Columbus and we are always available to help you try them out and determine which will fit your needs. Carrying doesn’t end with infancy! Most of our carriers will last through toddlerhood, and even beyond!

Food and Nutrition

“What’s for dinner?” This question is often enough to make parents want to head for the hills! Plus, with school starting soon, packable, easy lunches loom large on the parental radar. Are my kids eating enough? Too much? Am I serving healthy food? The questions are plentiful and the answers are confusing.

With the rise in childhood obesity, proper serving sizes and healthy, nutritious options are increasingly important in ensuring your child has a healthy relationship with food. But often it is even difficult for adults to make healthy choices-- so how can we ensure we are teaching our children properly? With more options out there, eating healthy has never seemed so difficult! Add in a picky preschooler (he only eats hot dogs!) and the frustration levels can reach critical in a hurry.

We’re here to relieve some of the pressure! Join us for an enlightening discussion about nutrition and eating-- as well as ways to get that picky preschooler to eat more than one food! Columbus Attachment Parents meet twice monthly to accommodate differing family schedules. In August we will meet on Saturday, August 8th at 10:30am and Thursday, August 27 at 6:30pm.

Sprout Swap - Aug 21-23

Our diaper and sling swap is coming up!

If you have gently used cloth diapers, baby slings or other natural items you would like included in the swap, please bring them in between July 28 and August 14. During this time we will tag and price items for sale in the swap. We can work with you to set competitive prices for your items.

On the 21st the swap opens and customers will be waiting outside the door to peruse the goods and find some great deals! On the last day, Sunday the 23rd, we will be open from 1-5pm and all the items still left in the swap will be discounted!

Families who bring items in for the swap can choose between 100% store credit or 80% cash for their items that sell. For best results, make sure your items are clean and have original tags or information with directions or brand names. You may wish to package diapers of the same style and size together in packs of 3-6.

Items that will be accepted are any type of cloth diaper or cover, baby slings, mei tais, structured carriers and wraps, nursing items such as pillows or reusable nursing pads. We will not take toys, furniture, clothing, or baby equipment like bouncy seats or exersaucers.
